Self-Retracting Infant Base Recall

NHTSA Recall No. 23C002

Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc. in the U.S.A. (DJ USA) has decided all models of Safety 1st onBoard 35 SecureTech and Maxi-Cosi Coral XP, Mico XP, Mico XP Max, and Mico Luxe+ rear facing infant car seats and Maxi-Cosi Infant Car Seat Base with self-retracting lower anchor systems fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 213 “Child Restraint Systems”.  

 
Consumers may continue to safely use these car seats with the base installed using the vehicle belt, or with carrier shell only installation using the vehicle belt, consistent with the existing instruction booklet and labels.  A free replacement base will be sent directly to you when it becomes available.  Please see further details below regarding models impacted as well as how to register for a replacement base.

    The below car seat/base models are affected for all dates of manufacture ranging from May 1, 2020 to February 28th, 2023.  Note that the complete model number has 3 characters following indicating the color/fashion.  ALL color/fashions for these models are impacted.

    Shipments were also made to other countries.  Those companies are being notified and are working with local experts and respective regulatory agencies to determine actions.

  3. Does this recall involve all Maxi Cosi and Safety 1st Infant Seats? 
     
    No. This only affects certain infant car seats with self-retracting latch systems in their base as noted above.
      
  4. Can I still safely use my Infant Seat and Base?

  5. How will I be notified with updates regarding the recall or replacement base? 
     
    If you have registered your car seat and have an affected model, you will receive a notification letter via mail, or e-mail.

  7. What do I do with my recalled car seat? 
     
    You can continue to use it safely with the vehicle belt for installation as described above. Once you no longer have use for the car seat you may recycle or dispose as you would with any other car seat.
      
  8. Can I continue using my infant carrier shell outside of the vehicle? 
     
    Yes, you may continue using the infant carrier outside the vehicle in all modes of use.
      
  9. When will the updated base be available? 
     
    We will be sending updates regarding availability so please ensure you have registered following the instructions above.
