4 Self-Care Ideas for Parents

4 Self-Care Ideas for Parents

Updated 10/7/21.

From the first moment you lay eyes on your little one, they become the center of your world. They’re the focus of all your attention, your love, and your spare time. Being a parent is a full-time job (and then some, if we’re being honest), so it’s no surprise parents often feel stressed and overwhelmed. No matter how much you love your minis, even five minutes to yourself can make all the difference. It might feel like an impossible task, but those few moments spent getting to do what brings you peace helps you be totally present for your children when you’re in mom-mode. Here are four self-care ideas for parents who could use a little me-time.

1. Meditate

Set aside time in the morning (or during your baby’s nap) to take a few deep breaths and reset your mind for the day. Guided meditation, breathing exercises, or a 10-minute yoga practice – there’s a relaxation technique for everyone. Try whatever fits into your schedule and your abilities, you can’t go wrong.

2. Take a Walk

Take a walk around the neighborhood, go for a hike, or feel the sun on your face in your own backyard – spending time in nature is rejuvenating. A breath of fresh air, if you will. Or you could always bring the outdoors in with some baby-safe house plants to get a little hint of green in your life if the weather doesn’t permit an adventure outside.

3. Play Your Favorite Music

Never underestimate the power of a good playlist. Bonus: You don’t even need to carve out time for it, just play your music as you fill up another bottle or get ready to change another dirty diaper.

4. Dream a Little Dream

You’ve heard the advice, “Sleep when your baby sleeps,” but for many of us, naptime for the baby has to be productive time for the parent. While you might initially groan at the idea of missed clean-up or meal prep, sometimes the best thing for everyone is to rest your eyes on the couch while your little one snoozes in their crib. The unfolded laundry will be there when you wake up.

The thing about self-care is that there’s no definition. Simply find what sparks joy for you, helps to refresh your head, brings a smile to your face. It's important for parents, even if it feels like there’s no time for it. Try to incorporate me-time (even if it’s brief) into your regular routine – you deserve it, and so do your children.
